Indoor Air Quality and Candles?
I told you it was coming and it’s here! Fall! I love it! I get out my fall scented candles, my sweaters and wait for the leaves to start falling. However, I got to thinking about what my wonderfully aromatic candles might be doing to my indoor breathing atmosphere. Of course, I went straight to the computer and started looking. Ugh! Just as I suspected. It’s possible I’m polluting my breathing atmosphere with the candles/aromas I love so much. That sounds terrible, right? Well, thank goodness not all candles and or scents are bad. I read on several sites that some of the real culprits are the wicks. We need to be careful if we choose to go ahead and use candles to use the ones with all cotton wicks. A lot of candles brands use metal in their wick which can be very toxic. We also need to be careful about what they are made of. The more expensive brands are usually better (typical you get what you pay for). We also need to be careful about what is used to scent the candles. As always, natural scents are best. The others are just chemicals which we definitely do not need in our indoor air.
I know we all like for our homes to smell warm and inviting. So, what do we do now? One particularly good site I ran across had several good suggestions such as natural potpourri and essential oils. Great suggestions. I even like to heat cider, cinnamon sticks, cloves and orange peel on the stove. Here is the link for some of those great alternatives: www.keeperofthehome.org/2012/04/toxins-in-candles-sad-but-true.html
