What Was In My Air Ducts?

You’ve probably always known/assumed there were the typical culprits in your air ducts.  You know, dust, allergens, dust mites, general dirt and grime and the like.  But I’m going to show you a picture that might just surprise you.  Recently we’ve done a couple of jobs where we found “a little” more than the usual suspects.  Check this out:   Kind of hard to believe isn’t it.  It’s really not even the worst we’ve seen.  Funny thing with this one is that the owner told us she had just had the ducts cleaned.  I’m sure she had. The problem is with the way they were cleaned.  The branch lines were most likely cleaned with a some form of brush cleaner which is ok.  However, it’s much better to go all the way to the trunk lines which is what we do.  And, where we found the above.  Good thing they called us.   We do the most thorough cleaning possible all the way to the trunk lines every time.  Hope this has given you some “food for thought”.

Ahhh Fall!

It’s still pretty warm out.  But, with the passing of Labor Day my mind turns towards Fall.  I love Fall!  The colors, the coolness of the morning air.  Thoughts of pumpkins, and pies and all that comes with it.  To me it’s the prelude to the holidays which I also love.

But, with that also comes thoughts of preparing the house for all that is coming.  Sometimes weatherizing is necessary. You know, weatherstripping, caulking, perhaps even adding extra insulation.  We all want to be comfortable and save money too!  From everything that I have been reading lately all of that is necessary to achieve those goals. My thought to go along with that is that it is great to keep the cold out and the costs down.  However, the air I want circulating in my house through the Fall and Winter needs to be as clean as possible.

To achieve the goal of clean indoor air there are lots of things to be considered.  Everything from vacuuming consistently with a good filtering vacuum to using an air purifier, to having the heating system maintained well, to making sure you change your air filters every month.  So many things to be considered including having the ducts cleaned every 5 to 7 years.  You’d be surprised by the things that can collect in air ducts over time.  If you are curious check out the photos on our website and see just what is sometimes found there.  mrbairduct.com

Anyway, just some food for thought for the upcoming season.

Air Duct Cleaning – Necessary or Not?

I have recently been perusing the internet for opinions on whether or not air duct cleaning is a necessary part of home maintenance.  As one would think there are many and varied ideas out there.  However, the more I read the more I see that although the EPA does not scientifically back up the necessity it does see its benefits.  More than that to me is that people (like you and me) are recommending it to their friends and  family.  Once people have it done they are immediately recognizing its many benefits.  I read one article in particular put out by Angie’s List that illustrates what I am referring to.  Her is an excerpt from that article:

Date Published: Jun 01 2009

Linda Wetzel of Shaker Heights, Ohio, says she was skeptical about air duct cleaning until a friend told her it had improved her allergies. “I figured common sense said, if there’s dust on the table, there has to be dust in the vents,” Wetzel says.

After hiring a highly rated cleaner she found on Angie’s List, Wetzel was very pleased with the results. She says she noticed an immediate improvement in air quality — everyone in the house suffered fewer allergies afterward — and the entire HVAC system worked more efficiently.

“We used our air conditioner less in the summer because it had so much more airflow,” she says. “And we used the heater less during an incredibly cold winter.”

Couldn’t have illustrated things any better than that myself.  Hope to provide more helpful information and tips in the coming weeks.

And Now To Clean!!

Ahhhhhh!  The kids are back in school and the house is empty for a majority of the day.  Hmmmm looks like they (those little darlings) did a number on your beautiful home during those summer months. Well, that’s the story at my house anyway.  I recently ran across a great little site with some wonderful tips for Fall house cleaning and thought I might share it with you.  Here is the link http://organizedhome.com/seasonal-spin/fall-cleaning-chore-checklist .  I found it most helpful even though I’m not really feeling the “Fall feeling” yet. I figured it never hurts to get a jump on things.

Hopefully we are all beginning to get into a regular “school year” routine and are looking forward to all this year has in store for us.  How about starting with a clean house?  Let’s see what we can do.

Glad to Be Back Blogging – Summer Air

It has been quite awhile since our last post.  We have been having some growing pains but growing is always good.

Obviously the Summer months are upon us and we are spending a lot more time inside and breathing indoor air.  If you’ve kept you duct work clean that is a very good thing.  If not, you could be experiencing some of the effects such as increased allergy symptoms, more dust on furniture and others.  Not to worry.  Having your ducts cleaned can have you back to breathing quality air indoors.

I’ve been hearing lately about hospitals having their air ducts cleaned to protect their patients.  In my book, if it’s good for them it’s probably good for me.

Anyway, if we can help just let us know!
