Ahhh Cooler Temps! Can It Affect Indoor Air Quality?
Have I mentioned that I love fall? Pretty sure I have. I really do. However, it does mean cooler temperatures, of course. I love that too. But how is that going to affect my indoor air quality? Well, of course, we will begin to turn on our furnaces, space heaters and fire up the fireplaces. I love all that stuff too, except what it can do to the indoor air.
Furnaces, space heaters and fire places all can “release gases and particulates into the air” according to William J. Calhoun, MD, professor of medicine and vice chair of the department of medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Of course, there are things that can lessen these affects. Be sure to have your furnace serviced regularly, make sure space heaters are used and maintained properly and clean fireplaces regularly. Even though most of us keep our windows tightly shut as the temperatures go down, occasionally opening them and using a small filter will allow fresh air in and keep the outdoor particulates out.
There are also several other ways we can improve our indoor air. Some of them include the following:
– Use HEPA filters
– Bathe pets regularly
– Use fan hood when cooking with gas ranges
– Keep the humidity level below 30-35 percent
– Dust with a damp cloth rather than dry
– Vacuum upholstered furniture and area rugs weekly
– Say NO to smoking in your home
– Use “low VOC” or “no VOC” cleaning products and preferably fragrance-free
These are just a few of the things you can do to improve the quality of your indoor are. “The good news is that this stuff is proven to work.” “By increasing ventilation and avoiding use of irritating substances, you will lower levels of known irritants,” according to E. Neil Schachter, MD, the medical director of respiratory care at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York.
