New Year Cleaning Resolutions? Don’t Forget Indoor Air
Yep! It’s here! The new year already. I have put off and procrastinated so many things. Especially the things I don’t like to do—like cleaning. Of course I do it, it has to be done. But, there are those things that get shoved way down the list. Way, way down the list. For me it’s changing lightbulbs and cleaning light fixtures. I ran across some tips from none other than Heloise about her “way down the list” things. Here they are:
“Yes, there are some chores even I avoid. These top my pledge-to-do-better list:
Toaster oven: I’ll line the crumb tray with aluminum foil so debris (a potential fire hazard) can be cleaned out more easily, and wipe down the glass door with soap and water so gunk doesn’t build up.
Tub/shower drain: Once a month, I’ll put on rubber gloves, pull up the stopper and remove trapped hair, oil, and greasy lint, then sanitize with 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide poured straight down the drain (let sit for an hour, then flush with water).
Computer: Because I type every day, I’ll unplug the keyboard every month, turn it over and gently tap to remove crumbs lodged between the keys, then wipe with a clean, damp cloth to remove surface muck.

Great tips that I will definitely use! This also made me think the new year is a good time to check the air filters in your home and perhaps have that HVAC check up you’ve been putting off. And, of course, don’t forget the air ducts. It may just be time to have them cleaned if you haven’t done it in the last 5 to 7 years. It truly makes a difference in the air you breathe indoors.
