Fire Pits and Air Quality…Indoors?
OK, so I’m going to make some confessions today that won’t paint me in the most intelligent manner. However, I’ve decided to proceed in hopes that I can keep someone else from “less than intelligent” mistakes. I love summer! Especially cooking, eating and relaxing on our back patio. Recently my family and I had the rare opportunity to do just that. My son wanted to get in on the grilling, which was great. Everyone chipped in and we had a wonderful dinner all cooked on the grill. Then, everyone was in the mood for a fire in the fire pit and some s’mores. No, problem. It was a beautiful evening very little wind and there was just a hint of a chill in the air. So, we lit the fire pit and began roasting the marshmallows for the deliciousness of s’mores. (Here’s where the less than intelligent part comes in) Soon, I looked up to realize that the patio door had remained open. Guess what that meant? Yep, the whole house was, basically, filled with smoke. At the very least, filled with the smell. I can only imagine what that did to the air quality inside. So, first lesson, if you are going to light the fire pit on the patio, close the door and open it only when necessary. You will save your home’s air and possibly some lung distress of your own.
After coming to the realization of what I had done to the indoor air I began to wonder about the outside air. Fire pits, chimineas, etc. are extremely popular these days. If we are all using them is it affecting our air? Upon doing some research, of course there are arguments on both sides. But, if that is a concern of yours, I have learned that there are actually alternatives. Apparently there are natural gas and propane burning fire pits, chimineas, etc. They are available at many home improvement stores and other retailers. That was something I didn’t know and was happy to discover.
At any rate, I hope my silly mistake and subsequent research discovery helps you out in some way. As always, if we can do anything to help improve your indoor breathing atmosphere please call us or visit our site.
