Fall Is Coming…Improve Indoor Air
Despite the reading on our thermometers fall is speeding towards us. Which means the fall allergy season is speeding towards us as well. Ugh! It seems we have spring allergies which lead into summer allergies which end up in fall allergies. Can we ever catch a break? Winter? Perhaps. However, it has been brought to my attention that by improving our indoor environment we may be better equipped to face the allergens that hit us head on outdoors. If we can clean and or remove the allergens from our indoor breathing environment we get a reprieve from the triggers and symptoms every time we enter our homes. An allergy “safe haven” if you will. Well, that sounds great but how does that help when we go back outdoors? If our bodies have had the “safe haven” for a few hours they have been able to recoup and strengthen to better battle what lies outside. We know very well that we cannot even hope to control what lies outside, but perhaps we could do a better job of what is inside.
With fall just around the corner one of the first things we could do would be to schedule that HVAC maintenance appointment. Why clean up and get rid of allergens if you are just going to recirculate them through a dirty system. Next, we can take steps to routinely vacuum and mop, wash linens and curtains, and even bathe the family pet. Also, using large door mats and cleaning them often can help tremendously. Of course, using non-toxic cleaning products is very helpful. This list can go on and on. Even if you can just incorporate one or two things into your routine your indoor breathing atmosphere will be better for it. I realize none of this is “rocket science” . But the more we can remind ourselves and put things into practice the better our overall quality of life can be.
