Indoor Air Quality: Why Does It Matter?
We spend a lot of time and money in this country trying to reduce pollutants and other harmful things in our breathing atmosphere. There are rules, regulations, laws, all kinds of things all aimed at keeping our outdoor air clean.
But, what about the air we breathe indoors. Is it any less important? No, in fact there is research that indicates our indoor environments can be up to five times more polluted than the outdoor environment. So, why should that matter to us? Well, there are several reasons it matters. It matters to our health. It matters for the structural integrity of our homes and businesses. It matters to our overall environment.
There are millions of us who suffer from allergies, asthma and any number of health related issues that can be triggered or exacerbated by poor indoor air quality. Some of the pollutants that can cause the most issues are things like smoking indoors, using chemical laden cleaners, regular petroleum based candles, using chemical-laden air fresheners, or even poor ventilation. Of course, there are thousands of possible pollutants. Vigilance is the key.
It really does actually matter for the structural integrity of our homes and business buildings. The very things that can affect the indoor air can affect our homes structure. Things such as these common housing problems or failures including musty odors and mold growth, window condensation, structural rot, peeling paint, backdrafting appliances, damp basements and ice dams, or build-up of ice on the roof’s edge can be serious problems both to our breathing atmosphere and our homes and offices.
And, of course, if the aforementioned pollutants get into our indoor air they eventually get into the outdoor air. This fact then affects all of us who share the outdoor air.
So, obviously trying to keep our indoor air quality as healthy as possible is vitally important to all of us. This information and more can be found at lung.org and epa.gov.
