Indoor Air Quality in Our Schools
Yep, it’s already that time. Back to school time. We get the supply lists. We buy the supplies. We get the school clothes, backpacks, shoes, haircuts, physicals, immunizations, lunch boxes and anything else that we think our kids will need to be successful. Have you ever even thought about the quality of the air your kids are breathing while they are learning and growing in those school buildings? I know I never really have. Obviously, I think about it in my home. But, during the school year they spend almost as much time in those buildings as they do in our homes. We should probably think about it.
Both the EPA and OSHA have great information and tools to help. They both point to older buildings in disrepair, poorly ventilated buildings, neglected ventilation systems, and, of course, VOC’s as major culprits in polluting the school buildings’ air quality. If your child already suffers from asthma or allergies this should already be ringing the bell of concern.
Of course, not all schools will have all of the before mentioned issues. But, it is worth our time and effort to at least check into what our school are doing to ensure our kids have good quality indoor are to breathe while they are learning. I’m going to leave the links to several great resources that we can take advantage of and even pass along to our schools. Hopefully this has given you some “food for thought” today. Here’s to a great school year!
