Summer Allergies and Indoor Air Quality
It’s summer! Yayyyy!! However, summer allergies come along with it. In my personal experience I feel like they are worse in more humid climates. Nevertheless, if you suffer it can be miserable. Perusing the world wide web I, once again, ran across some great information about what some of the culprits are and and also some great tips on how to get some relief.
Apparently, summer air pollution is a huge problem with allergy sufferers. Honestly I always believed it was more about pollen, mold and dust. According to WebMd it seems clouds of ozone can be formed around cities because of the more intense sunlight and lighter winds. Ozone is a combination of sunlight, nitrogen oxide and hydrocarbons. Of course, after that are the usual suspects such as pollen and other airborne allergens. Dust mites are a particular nuisance this time of year. They thrive in warm, humid temperatures and nest in beds, fabric, and carpets. Their residue can get into the air, triggering sneezes, wheezes, and runny noses.
WebMd also gave some great tips on how to deal with these things inside your home. Their tips are listed below:
- Try to stay indoors whenever the pollen count and smog is high.
- Keep your doors and windows closed and air condition on whenever possible to keep allergens out. Use an air purifier.
- Clean air filters in your home often. Clean bookshelves, vents, and other places where pollen can collect.
- Wash bedding and rugs in hot water to eliminate dust mites and other allergens.
- Wash your hair, shower, and change clothing after going outside to wash away pollen.
- Vacuum often. Wear a mask, because vacuuming can kick up pollen, mold, and dust trapped in your carpet. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter.
- Wear a mask when you mow your lawn to avoid grass pollen.
- Keep the humidity in your house between 30% and 50% to prevent the growth of dust mites.
