Humidity – Indoor Air Quality
Humidity – We all deal with it. Actually, living in Tennessee we know it exists but don’t probably give it much thought. Which, is not really a good idea. It can wreak havoc on your indoor air quality. If the humidity levels in our homes are not controlled it can lead to major problems with mold and even dust mites. For those of us who are sensitive to these things it can cause major health and comfort issues. So, now that we are thinking about it, what can we do about it?
First, it’s good to know about where the humidity levels should be in your home. Experts say between 35-45% is a good level to shoot for. To be able to achieve those levels we need to find out where we are currently. An inexpensive “weather station” type device will give you a general reading. It’s not a perfect measure but it will at least give a general idea. When you have figured out your current humidity level then you can try and determine where the issues are. Not simple, but it is very important. Of course, at this point you address any issues that are found.
After that it’s a matter of maintaining those optimum levels. That is not always an easy task either. Fixing the source issues should go a long way in helping but then there are always dehumidifiers of all types and sizes.
This is just the tip of the “iceberg” when it comes to this issue. My main goal was to at least get you thinking about it. Here is a great source to get in depth information and help on this: http://inspectapedia.com/sickhouse/Humidity_Level_Target.htm .
